Take an aerial tour of what it will be like to drive on the new LBJ Express
When Interstate 635 ("LBJ Freeway") was constructed some 40 years ago, it was a highly-advanced roadway celebrated for innovative transportation solutions. Over the years, however, LBJ has become the source of traffic tangles and serious frustration, as hundreds of thousands of North Texans each day crowd onto the now-undersized roadway.
That’s about to change.
Beginning in 2011, LBJ will undergo a dramatic transformation, thanks to an innovative public-private partnership that will enable much-needed infrastructure to be built decades earlier than possible under the traditional funding approach.
LBJ Express will feature dramatic improvements to Interstate 35E and Interstate 635 in Dallas. This innovative project will feature rebuilt main lanes, a continuous frontage road system and 13 miles of new managed lanes. The managed lanes will feature approximately five miles of new depressed roadway between Josey Lane and Hillcrest Road. By using the new managed lanes, motorists will be guaranteed a reliable, predictable trip through this frequently congested corridor.
This public-private partnership funding approach leverages $490 million in tax dollars to create billions of dollars in congestion-relieving roadway benefits for local drivers, while also creating 2,000 new jobs for Texans. The construction will provide long-term benefits to North Dallas neighborhoods and businesses.
The LBJ Infrastructure Group partners collectively employ some 2,000 Texans and will integrate more than 100 additional Dallas-Fort Worth and Texas companies and their employees into the project.
Construction is expected to begin in early 2011 and be completed by 2016.
